Fairless Hills, Pa---- Sammy E. Ray, 79, of Fairless Hills, Pa died Saturday October 28, 2023, at Saint Mary Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Portage, Pa., he grew up in the Johnstown, Pa. area before moving to Fairless Hills. Sammy proudly served in the Army during Vietnam achieving the rank of Sargeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal of Valor. He became a Police Officer with the Lower Makefield Police department serving over 25 years before retiring in 2000.
Sammy, in his younger days, enjoyed playing softball, being involved with several recreational leagues. He became an avid golfer, playing courses all over the area with many family members and friends. He would also enjoy playing pinochle with his Legion buddies every week until his passing. He was a devout Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. He thought the best place on earth was Steelers Country. If he couldn’t be there the best place would be the local bar, with his Steeler family, watching and hoping for another Superbowl victory. “The Steelers Have Six”
Married to Donna L. Ray for over 52 years before her passing in 2020, he was the son of the late Gordon Sr. and Gladys Ray, brother of the late Judy Chilton, Patty Tirko, Dwayne Ray, and Dwight Ray. He is survived by a daughter and son in law Donna (Geoffrey) Schutzbank, a son Michael Ray, three brothers Bill (Linda), Gordon Jr. ”Boss” (Arlene), Gary (Pat), a sister Shirley, grandchildren Samantha Schutzbank , Joshua Schutzbank, Alec Schutzbank, Alyn Ray and Shug Ray, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday November 9, 2023, at 10:30 am at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery 830 Highland Rd. Newtown, Pa. Please arrive at cemetery by 10:15 am.
