Evangeline Stokes Obituary

On Sunday May 8, 2022, Evangeline Leah Stokes passed away at the age of 89. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Augustus and Eloise Jones.  Evangeline grew up attending Sunday school and church and at the age of 18 she received her Christian Baptism.  She continued to serve the Lord and married Rev. Marion Francis Stokes, Sr. and they had five children.  She is predeceased by Rev. Marion Francis Stokes Sr. and her son, Samuel Grant Stokes.

They lived together in Princeton, NJ while Rev. Stokes served as the Pastor of Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. church.  Evangeline served in the church diligently for many years as an usher, member of the steward and trustee board and office finance clerk. During her dedicated service at Mt. Pisgah, Evangeline was awarded for creating a motto for the church that said, “A Great Church Serving a Great God by a Great People.”

Evangeline attended technical college and exercised her math and technology skills as a Technical Secretary at Aero Chem Research Labs of Princeton NJ. After retiring from Aero Chem, she became Secretary to the Rector at Trinity Church of Princeton.  She retired to Hampton, VA in 2005. 

As a resident of Sinclair Commons in Hampton, VA, Evangeline helped those in the building that needed her assistance in one way or another. Whether it was helping them sort out their mail or just visiting and providing companionship.  She served on the food pantry and carried food from door to door to other seniors in the building.  She actively participated in the weekly praise and bible studies in her building.

During the early stage of her illness Evangeline moved to Morrisville, Pa to live in the loving care of her daughter Grace and son Robert Stokes.  She joined Robert in fellowship and worship at Calvary Full Gospel Church. 

Evangeline had nine siblings.  She was predeceased by them all except two, Priscilla Parker and Nicholas Jones, Jr.   She will be missed by her 4 children, Marion F. Stokes, Jr., Janus Aaron Stokes, Robert Cornelius Stokes and Grace Elizabeth Stokes.  She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Eli, Crystal, Aaron, Moriah, Clinton, Matthew, Danielle,  Lexis and Deja as well as her great grandchildren, Zamir, Avyion, Daxon, Jaiden, Zariah, Grace, Colton, Emelia, Amya, Carter and Alaina and a host of family.  She will forever live in our hearts.

Calling Hours will be 12:00pm to 1:00pm at the Calvery Full Gospel Church 676 Lincoln Hwy Fairless Hills , Pa followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00pm. Interment will be in the Family Cemetery.
